POSITION OBJECTIVE

 

Working under limited supervision, the Research Assistant 3 will coordinate research work in the lab as part of a collaborative, multi-faceted project in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, focusing on the role of 15-Hydroxprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) in cancer and as a therapeutic target for tissue regeneration after injury. This extensive project requires the utilization of advanced skills in the techniques of molecular biology, cell biology and mouse studies. The research assistant will report weekly progress to the principal investigator and coordinate efforts with other workers. This position will work with mice.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Coordinate and perform laboratory/research activities to sustain the appropriate levels of various mouse strains, maintenance of these strains and establishment of cell lines from various GI tumors and cell This includes, but is not limited to, providing care for animals, inspecting animals regularly, maintaining ID/records of all animals and keeping datasheets up-to-date and circulated appropriately. (50%)
  2. Work closely with the principal investigator for conducting a series of experiments to supply data as part of a larger scientific project on cancer genetics Design, manage and carry out complex and innovative research techniques, evaluate the efficaciousness of new techniques, recommend and develop new assays, analyze and formally present the resulting data before members of the laboratory on a regular basis. (15%)
  3. Devise new protocols and techniques for research projects involving high degree of skill and Adapt new techniques from literature to the lab. Collect, analyze and interpret data from multiple experiments. (15%)
  4. Evaluate adequacy of techniques; study and test new procedures and analyze Perform mammalian cell culture to establish and maintain the colon cancer cell line and xenograft banks; quantitate cell growth following established protocols and conduct transfection protocols involving human colon cells. (10%)

CONTACTS

 

Department: Weekly contact with the laboratory principal investigator, is anticipated to discuss research and maintain workflow. Daily contact with research fellows overseeing 15-PGDH research projects.

 

University: Regular contact within the Department of Genetics or the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center are anticipated weekly to monthly to discuss research and maintain workflow.

 

External: Occasional contact with vendors as needed.

 

Students: Regular contact with students, research fellows and other technicians are expected to discuss research and maintain workflow.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

 

May be asked to instruct staff or students new to the laboratory on techniques or common laboratory protocols.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience in biology or biochemistry required. Education: Bachelor of Science degree required.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

 

  1. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the cancer genetics field.
  2. Strong molecular biology skills (PCR, Western blots, basic cloning/subcloning techniques).
  3. Extensive experience with PCR, basic cloning/subcloning techniques, Western blotting and mouse studies.
  4. Strong working knowledge of human genetics and basic statistical
  5. Ability to interact with other lab personnel to coordinate laboratory activities, discuss experiments and carry out projects in accordance with general plans is essential. Ability to

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

The employee will work in a fully equipped molecular biology laboratory in the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center research laboratories. General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards. Personal protective equipment, including lab coat, gloves and goggles, will be provided to limit exposure to hazards. Potential hazards include exposure to radioactivity, carcinogens, formaldehyde, laboratory chemicals, cell lines established from human tumors and human tissue samples. The employee also has the possibility of exposure to hepatitis virus and would need to receive hepatitis virus vaccine prophylaxis. Since this work involves clinical human samples, confidentiality needs to be maintained.
