PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Vice President of Justice Initiatives, the Director of Future of Public Safety Programs, will be a leader of John Jay College's Future of Public Safety Initiative. The Future of Public Safety Initiative is designed to help communities across the country reshape safety policy, programs and budgets to support healthy, safe and racially just communities. This initiative promotes a vision for transforming public safety through:

o extensive community engagement

o expanded investments in social and community programs that reduce violence and crime

o the healing of deeply-rooted racial divides

o experimentation with new ways of addressing crime and safety

o collaborative and rigorous research that identifies what works to create safe communities; and o reforms to law enforcement operations, culture and accountability.

The Future of Public Safety Initiative seeks to promote and expand the existing programs and research at John Jay College as well as develop new tools, programs and research that are aligned with this vision. We view this work as highly collaborative and work with many different local and national stakeholders, including elected leaders, law enforcement leaders, criminal legal system practitioners, system-impacted people, community advocates, non-profit service providers, scholars and funders to achieve our goals.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of the Future of Public Safety Programs and Partnerships will be an experienced public safety policy expert and possess a deep understanding of the political, social and economic factors shaping public safety and criminal legal systems across the country. The Director of the Future of Public Safety Programs and Partnerships will report into John Jay's Vice President of Justice Initiatives and will help to develop and support programs and partnerships in line with the goals of the initiative.

 

The responsibilities of the Director of the Future of Public Safety Programs and Partnerships will include:

Leading a national pledge and network, along with partner organizations, to support mayor's offices and their communities in re-imagining their approaches to public safety

Managing partnerships with external partners (e.g., criminal legal system practitioners, researchers, elected officials, advocates, community-based organizations) to advance the goals of the Future of Public Safety Initiative

Managing program budget and supporting fundraising efforts via engagement with potential funders and drafting proposals

Collaborating with internal experts and partners across John Jay, including our research and program centers, professors, staff and students to promote and disseminate research projects and programs at John Jay College that are aligned with the Future of Public Safety goals

 

Identifying and disseminating proven and promising public safety reform policies, programs and research from around the country including through the reports, conferences, roundtables and webinars

Developing and executing communications strategies, in collaboration with John Jay's communications experts, that promote John Jay's Future of Public Safety initiative and partnerships

Supervision of consultants, interns, researchers, and staff that are engaged with the Future of Public Safety initiative

This position is based in New York, NY.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and eight years' relevant experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of public safety, the criminal legal system, civil rights, racial equity and economic justice issues. The successful candidate will have experience as an organizational leader and problem solver and exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, demonstrate cultural awareness, exercise emotional intelligence, and possess the ability to build trust and credibility to effectively collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders. This individual will possess the expertise and credibility to work closely with diverse stakeholders including elected officials, advocates, researchers, law enforcement, community organizations and advocates, among others.

In addition, the preferred candidate should have:

At least five years of successful and progressive experience working on issues of public safety and/or criminal legal system reform;

Deep relationships with people and organizations involved in local and national discussions of policing, the criminal legal system, and public safety;

Knowledge of programs and scholarship on key topics in public safety, especially with regards to strategies for creating a racially just public safety paradigm in our communities;

Experience creating and executing communications strategies including leveraging significant media and public policy issues to broaden programmatic reach and deepen impact;

Excellent organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to take initiative, problem solve, prioritize duties, balance competing priorities, work independently and with teams in a fast-paced environment, pay close attention to detail, meet deadlines and work well under pressure;

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including ability to effectively lead and facilitate meetings involving diverse groups of stakeholders; and

Expertise presenting, writing about, and discussing difficult or controversial topics with diverse audiences in a way that promotes productive interactions and positive outcomes.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

As a senior staff member in a Campus or University Executive's office, leads unit initiatives, participates in planning and setting priorities, and drives strategic initiatives to ensure their success.

- Participates in planning and in setting policies with responsibility for preparing aspects of strategic and operational plans. Participates in developing and executing performance management systems to evaluate progress.

- Works with other Campus and University units to oversee complex, high-priority projects, with responsibility for outcomes.

- Represents the Executive in Campus or University-wide activities and may act in his/her place when required.

- Independently carries out major responsibilities under the Executive's purview, such as monitoring and evaluating unit activities, financial planning and review, serving as chair of key committees, and communications with senior Campus or University management.

- May serve as Chief of Staff of a large Executive Office. - Performs related duties as assigned.
