Public Communications Specialist

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for a Public Communications Specialist for the Urban Research & Community Engagement department. This is a full-time, permanent staff position. 

Purpose of the Position: This job requires a digital design specialist to work with the Senior Director, Community Partnerships to enhance urbanCORE’s Web presence, digital communications and social media outreach. The job entails maintaining and enhancing all websites and digital promotion associated with urbanCORE and its affiliates. It requires keen understanding of the functionalities of web pages and digital communications as well as the principles and practices of urbanCORE’s community engagement and engaged scholarship responsibilities. This employee will work with directors and managers to manage the websites’ content, design and functionality; use social media and e-newsletters for maximum impact; and monitor and advise about new technologies for communication (an example might be podcasting). This employee also will support the design and maintenance of emerging digital tools to track and monitor engaged scholarship activity, including the Virtual Knowledgebase and Student e-Portfolio. In addition, this employee will assist as needed with content display and content production, such as writing/editing of articles, headlines, summaries and captions, as well as photography and photo selection, and enhancing data visualization offerings. Videography, video and audio editing might be part of the job as well.

Salary: $52,500 - $62,329

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in a closely related field and at least three years of experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities needed in the area of assignment.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred in journalism, communications, English, web development or other relevant field. Web publication experience via jobs or internships. Strong communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to work with others in a collegial manner. Familiar with local, state and national public policy topics. Must be adaptable and flexible in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines and able to manage a high level of volume that is detail oriented.
