Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit 

University Development’s purpose is to support the mission of the university by raising private resources to enhance financial support for students, faculty, programs and facilities. University Development provides leadership and centralized services to all development offices throughout the University, serving as a focal point for annual giving, application development and IT support; campaign management; constituent programs; corporate and foundation relations; donor relations; gift planning; gift services; industry relations; marketing/communications; parents giving; principal gifts; prospect management, research and analytics; regional programs; scholarships and student aid; talent management; university events; and volunteer engagement.

Position Summary         

 

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

 

The Director of Business Intelligence, Data Analytics and Reporting will provide leadership and oversight for OneCarolina Development’s business intelligence and data analytics efforts. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Business and Operations for University Development, the Director will lead a team of technical developers and analysts responsible for the underlying data warehouse(s) and the departmental reporting platforms.

 

The Director will develop an understanding of our business and how analytics can drive greater fundraising success. The director will play a key role in generating analytical solutions by mining data, conducting analysis, and generating insights that lead to actions. Working with different units throughout the OneCarolina Development community, the Director will respond to data and analytics requests by gathering business requirements, sourcing, and validating data, analyzing data, building models, creating visualizations, and synthesizing insights to support the mission of Development. The Director will develop and execute processes that facilitate consistent, efficient management of key business reviews and deliverables. This will be achieved by managing through and collaborating across the leadership team, various units, and other key stakeholders.

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements          

 

Master’s and 2-4 years’ experience; or Bachelors and 3-5 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

 

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

 

Degree(s) and/or related education and experience preferably must encompass Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Mathematics, Business, or related field. Other degrees coupled with sufficient business intelligence and analytics experience will be considered. Have a minimum of 5 years of practical experience in business intelligence (BI) and data analytics. Sound understanding of BI best practices and methodologies. Demonstrated experience in people management – Ability to motivate and engage a team of employees through effective communication to achieve program goals. Experience preparing and presenting executive level presentations and findings. Strong organizational, planning, and coordination skills – the ability to organize, prioritize work, meet deadlines and work independently. Be a creative problem solver, flexible, proactive and ability to work in a fast paced, ever-changing environment. Be self-driven and show ability to deliver on ambiguous projects with incomplete or dirty data. Demonstrated expertise in business analysis, modeling, and data management with strong attention to detail. Able to understand various data structures and common methods in data transformation. Excellent pattern recognition and predictive modeling skills. 

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience   

Have a minimum of 5 years of practical experience in statistical analysis, ETL, data processing, and database programming. Sound understanding of relational data structures, dimensional modeling, data warehouse and reporting techniques. Extensive background in data mining and statistical analysis. Experience with programming languages such as Java/Python is an asset. Advanced skills in Excel (Pivot Tables, Data Analysis Tool Pack), PowerPoint as well as any data visualization tools like Tableau, MS Power BI, or similar BI tools.
